Elimination Diet Plan: A Phased Approach
A three-phase elimination protocol: 2 to 4 weeks off common triggers, 6 to 8 weeks of planned reintroduction, then a long-term diet that only excludes confirmed problems. Edit each phase in Foodzilla.
How this elimination diet is run
Elimination diets catch delayed reactions that IgE blood tests miss. They are a clinical tool, not a wellness cleanse.
Three phases: elimination for 2 to 4 weeks, reintroduction for 6 to 8 weeks, then maintenance. Nutrition stays adequate in each phase so the client is not also under-eating.
Typical reasons to run this: IBS, chronic migraine, eczema, joint pain, fatigue, bloating, gas, and abdominal pain you cannot pin on one food yet.
Phase 1: Elimination, 2 to 4 weeks
Common triggers come out for at least two to four weeks so you can get a quieter baseline. This phase drops:
- Gluten and wheat-containing grains (bread, pasta, cereals, barley, rye)
- Dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, cream)
- Eggs and egg-containing products
- Soy and soy-derived ingredients (tofu, soy sauce, edamame)
- Corn and corn-derived products (corn syrup, cornstarch)
- Peanuts and tree nuts
- Shellfish and crustaceans
- Nightshade vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, potatoes)
- Citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, grapefruit)
- Refined sugars, artificial sweeteners, and alcohol
- Processed meats, food colourings, and preservatives
Phase 2: Reintroduction, 6 to 8 weeks
Add foods back one group at a time. Three days on the test food, then two days off. That gap is how you catch delayed reactions.
Protocol for each food group:
Day 1: A small serving at one meal.
Day 2: If nothing happened, two servings at different meals.
Day 3: The food at three meals, as they would normally eat it.
Days 4 to 5: Take it back out and watch for a delayed reaction.
Keep a symptom diary: gut, energy, skin, mood, joints, headaches, sleep. Without that log, you are guessing.
Phase 3: Maintenance
Only confirmed triggers stay out. Everything that passed comes back, so the diet does not stay narrower than it needs to be.
Rules that keep maintenance honest:
- Permanently remove only confirmed trigger foods.
- Re-challenge borderline foods every 3 to 6 months. Tolerance can change.
- Replace dropped foods with something that covers the same nutrients.
- For mildly reactive foods, a rotation of no more than once every four days can work.
- Watch for new reactions and change the plan if they appear.

How to use this template in your practice
Build a separate week for each phase. Edit the exclusion list. Keep calories and macros high enough that the client is not also in a deficit.
Export a branded PDF per phase. Use the food diary and symptom log in Foodzilla during reintroduction so you have data, not a recap from memory.
What you are trying to get
A short list of foods that actually cause symptoms, and a diet the client can live on. A forever-banned list of eleven food groups is a failed protocol.
