Arthritis Diet Plan: Supporting Joint Health and Reducing Inflammation
A week for arthritis that puts omega-3s, antioxidant-rich plants, and unsaturated fats on the plate. Edit it in Foodzilla, including nightshade swaps if those are a trigger.
What arthritis is
Inflammation in one or more joints: pain, stiffness, less movement. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the common types. Diet can push inflammation up or down. It will not replace disease-modifying drugs.
What this week leans on
Omega-3s have the clearest food data for joint symptoms. Sources:
- Oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines.
- Walnuts, flax, and chia if the client does not eat fish.
A supplement can sit on top if food cannot cover the dose. That is a clinical decision.
Whole food does the rest: fruit, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds.
- Fruit and vegetables. Antioxidants. Leafy greens, berries, and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli are useful here.
- Nuts and seeds. Unsaturated fat and fibre.
- Whole grains. Brown rice, quinoa, oats.
Olive oil, avocado, and some nuts. Extra virgin olive oil contains oleocanthal, which has NSAID-like activity in lab work.
Foods to limit
These tend to raise inflammatory load:
Processed food high in saturated and trans fats, salt, and preservatives.
A lot of sugar and refined carbohydrate: white bread, pastries, sugary snacks.
Fatty red meat and processed meat such as bacon, sausages, and deli meat.
Nightshades, tomatoes, eggplant, potatoes, and peppers, contain solanine. Not everyone with arthritis reacts. A time-limited drop is a reasonable test.
A lot of alcohol or caffeine can worsen symptoms for some people.
Sample arthritis-friendly day
A day built around those foods:
- Breakfast with omega-3s and antioxidants.
- A fibre-rich snack.
- A salad with oily fish and unsaturated fat.
- A snack with fibre, protein, and fat.
- Dinner with legumes, greens, and whole grains.
- Fibre and fat to finish the day.
What you are aiming for
1. Less joint inflammation from omega-3-rich food.
2. Fats, fibre, and antioxidants that support the joint over time.
3. Weight that does not load the joints more than it has to.
4. A whole-food week that the rest of the body can also live on.
