Very Low Sodium Meal Plan
An 1,800 kcal week that stays under 1,500 mg of sodium a day. That is the American Heart Association target for people who need a tight sodium cap.
What sodium does
Sodium helps hold fluid balance, blood pressure, nerve signals, and muscle contraction. Most of it comes from salt and from processed food. Too much raises blood pressure and adds load to the heart and kidneys. Cutting it is one of the more reliable diet moves for those conditions.
The sodium targets
WHO suggests 2,000 mg of sodium a day. The American Heart Association goes lower: 1,500 mg. This week is built to the 1,500 mg line.
The 1,800 kcal very-low-sodium plan is a first draft you check against the rest of the care plan before you assign it.
What dropping sodium to 1,500 mg is for
Table salt and processed food are the usual sources. Getting under 1,500 mg is work, but the reasons are concrete:
1. Blood pressure. Sodium holds water in the vessels. Less sodium is one of the diet tools that lowers blood pressure and cuts hypertension risk.
2. Heart and stroke risk. Less sodium reduces the load that drives atherosclerosis and extra cardiac work.
3. Kidneys. Sodium makes the kidneys work harder. That matters if function is already reduced.
4. Oedema. Extra sodium holds fluid in the tissues. Dropping it can reduce swelling.
5. Food quality. Hitting 1,500 mg usually means more whole food and less packaged food, which also improves the rest of the nutrient profile.
Check the rest of the patient first
The week is a starting point, not a prescription. Match it to goals, preferences, and diagnoses. Talk to the medical team if the client is on diuretics, has heart failure, or has kidney disease.
Review the nutritionals before you assign the plan.
Look at the whole picture. A sodium cut that fights the rest of the care plan is a bad cut.
How to use this template in your practice
Tighten or loosen sodium per meal, swap foods the client will eat, and set calories. Watch potassium if they are also on a renal restriction.
Export a branded PDF and send it through the portal. The grocery list should point at low-sodium products, not the regular versions.
The 1,000 mg that actually moves numbers
Average US intake is well above both targets. Cutting about 1,000 mg a day is enough to move blood pressure for many people. Use this week as the first draft, then keep editing until the client can live with it.
