Low Sodium & Cholesterol Meal Plan

A 2,000 kcal week that cuts sodium and dietary cholesterol. Lean protein, high-fibre plants, and unsaturated fats. Use it for blood pressure and lipid work.

Why sodium is cut

Sodium is needed for fluid balance and nerve function. Too much raises blood pressure and heart risk.

  • Blood pressure. High sodium is a major driver of hypertension, which raises heart-disease and stroke risk.
  • Oedema. Extra sodium holds water in the tissues.
  • Stroke. Lower sodium is linked with lower stroke risk.
  • Heart load. Less sodium means less extra work for the heart.

Why cholesterol in food is limited

Cholesterol is in body cells and in animal food. LDL, often called bad cholesterol, can build plaque in arteries. HDL helps clear LDL. This week keeps dietary cholesterol and the fats that raise LDL down, so the blood picture has a better chance of moving.

The 2,000 kcal week

A general-use week for clients without a tighter medical diet. The shopping list does the work:

  • Lean protein. Poultry, fish, legumes, tofu. Less saturated fat than red meat.
  • Fibre. Whole grains, fruit, vegetables, and legumes, which can lower cholesterol and help the gut.
  • Unsaturated fats. Avocado, nuts, seeds, olive oil.
  • Low sodium. Herbs and spices instead of extra salt.
  • Less trans fat and saturated fat, the dietary drivers of high LDL.
  • General use when there is no extra restriction.
