Nightshade-Free Diet Meal Plan
A 7-day week with no Solanaceae foods: tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, white potatoes, and chilli products. Food lists and swaps so the plate still works. Use it for autoimmune disease or a suspected nightshade reaction.
7-day nightshade-free meal plan
No nightshade vegetables. The rest of the week stays mixed and edible.
What nightshade vegetables are
Nightshades are plants in the Solanaceae family. They include some of the most common vegetables. They also contain alkaloids such as solanine, capsaicin, and tomatine. Most people eat them with no problem. Some people with rheumatoid arthritis, IBD, or psoriasis find symptoms ease when those foods are out. A nightshade-free week is a test of that, not a proven treatment for everyone.
- Tomatoes (all varieties, including cherry, sun-dried)
- Bell peppers (all colours)
- Hot peppers (jalapeño, habanero, etc.)
- Eggplant / Aubergine
- White potatoes (not sweet potatoes)
- Chili powder and chili flakes
- Hot sauce and salsa (tomato-based)
- Sweet potatoes and yams
- Cauliflower and broccoli
- Carrots and parsnips
- Zucchini and squash
- Beets (great tomato substitute)
- Leafy greens (spinach, kale, lettuce)
- Onions and garlic
- Celery and cucumbers
- Black pepper (NOT a nightshade)
- Turmeric and ginger
- All fruits (berries, citrus, etc.)
- All proteins (meat, fish, eggs, legumes)

Tips for a nightshade-free week
- Read labels. Paprika and cayenne hide in spice blends and seasoned salt. Cajun seasoning often has them too.
- Use beet-based sauces when you need a red, savoury base. Roast beets with garlic and herbs.
- Sweet potatoes are not nightshades. They are Convolvulaceae, and they stand in for white potatoes.
- Black pepper is safe. It is Piperaceae, not Solanaceae.
- Eliminate for 3 to 4 weeks, then add one nightshade back at a time, with 3 days between tests.
Who might try this
People who suspect a nightshade reaction, or who have a chronic inflammatory condition and want a structured test:
- Autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or multiple sclerosis. Alkaloids may worsen flares in some people.
- IBD. Some people with Crohn's or ulcerative colitis report fewer symptoms off nightshades.
- Psoriasis or eczema. Worth a time-limited trial if other triggers are already controlled.
- Unexplained joint pain or stiffness.
- AIP. Nightshade elimination is part of the autoimmune protocol.
