Bariatric Diet Meal Plan

A 600 kcal soft-foods week for the post-bariatric soft-foods phase. Protein first, small portions, no fizzy drinks or straws. Step calories up as the surgeon's protocol allows.

Where this sits after surgery

After gastric bypass or sleeve, clients move through liquid, puree, then soft food. This week is the soft-foods phase: food that is easy to digest, with enough protein, at a low calorie load.

  • 1. Clear liquids. Water, broth, sugar-free gelatin.
  • 2. Full liquids. Protein shakes and soups.
  • 3. Purees. For protein while the staple line heals.
  • 4. Soft foods. This 600 kcal week.

Rules for the 600 kcal soft-foods week

Clients need clear instructions in this phase:

  • - Small, mixed meals so the pouch can handle them and protein still lands.
  • - Low calories, low fat, low sweets.
  • - Log portions, calories, and protein. Guessing fails here.
  • - Eat slowly and chew well. Discomfort is common if they rush.
  • - Avoid raw vegetables, fresh fruit skins, tough meat such as pork and steak, rice, and bread if they do not sit well. Ground meats are usually easier.
  • - No straws, carbonated drinks, or chewing ice. Air in the pouch hurts.
  • - No sugar or sugar drinks. They blow the calorie cap and can dump.
  • - First two months: 300 to 600 calories a day, liquids then thicker liquids. Do not go above 1,000 calories until the team says so.

How to use this template in your practice

Step calories as the protocol allows. Protect protein. Swap foods the pouch will tolerate.
