Renal Diet Plan: Supporting Kidney Health

A week that holds protein, sodium, potassium, and phosphorus to renal targets. Change the numbers from labs and CKD stage in Foodzilla.

What renal means here

The kidneys filter waste and extra fluid, hold electrolytes, and make hormones for blood pressure and red cells.

When CKD or another kidney condition reduces that work, waste and fluid build up. A renal diet lowers the nutrients the kidneys then have to clear: protein, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, and sometimes fluid.

The numbers this week uses

Protein 0.6 to 0.8g/kg. A 70kg person gets about 56g or less, so the kidneys have less nitrogenous waste.

Sodium 2,000mg or less, to limit blood pressure and fluid retention.

Potassium 3,000mg or less, because the kidneys normally clear potassium and high levels are dangerous.

Phosphorus 800mg or less, to protect bone and to reduce vascular calcification.

Fluid if the kidneys cannot clear it. Do not push extra drinks.

A sample day, about 1,900 to 2,000 calories

- 56g or less of protein.

- 2,000mg or less of sodium.

- 3,000mg or less of potassium.

- 800mg or less of phosphorus.

Why the numbers matter

When kidney function falls, sodium, potassium, and phosphorus are harder to handle. Hitting these caps reduces that load. It can slow CKD progression for some people. Change nothing without the renal team.

Other notes

1. 1,900 to 2,000 calories is a default. Change it for the person.

2. Keep unsaturated fats, fibre, and micronutrients in. A renal diet that is only restrictions will fail.

3. Limit processed food. It is where sodium and phosphorus hide.
