Plant-Based Mediterranean Diet
Mediterranean pattern without seafood, eggs, or dairy. Fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and plant proteins. Edit it in Foodzilla.
What the plant-based Mediterranean diet is
The usual Mediterranean plate minus animal products. Fresh plants, whole grains, unsaturated fats, and plant protein. Suitable for vegan clients who still want that pattern.
What the week focuses on
1. A lot of fruit and vegetables. Vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fibre.
2. Whole grains instead of refined. Quinoa, brown rice, farro, wholewheat. Fibre and a longer fill.
3. Lentils, beans, nuts, and seeds. Protein, fibre, unsaturated fats, and amino acids.
4. Unsaturated fats from olive oil, avocado, nuts, and seeds. These are the fats the Mediterranean data is built on.
5. Plant proteins such as tofu, edamame, chickpeas, and lentils instead of fish, eggs, and dairy.
Foods to avoid or limit
- Highly processed foods. Packaged snacks and ready meals with additives and a lot of salt.
- High-sugar foods and drinks. Use fruit or a small amount of maple syrup if you need sweetness.
- Saturated and trans fats from processed food. Use nuts and seeds instead.
- Excess salt, which pushes blood pressure up.
- Red and processed meat. Already out on this version.
Why people combine the two patterns
The Mediterranean data is strong:
- Heart. Unsaturated fats, fibre, and antioxidants are linked with lower cholesterol and blood pressure.
- Weight. Whole, unprocessed food is easier to maintain on.
- Chronic disease. Fruit, vegetables, and unsaturated fats are linked with lower rates of diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers.
Dropping animal products also matches vegan ethics or a lower environmental footprint, if that is the brief.
